He’s 10, and has been playing piano for a couple years. Every once in awhile he goes through a “don’t want to play any more” period. It’s that parental moment where you remember being young, and wish someone had encouraged you to persevere… not just to cultivate proficiency in the “thing” itself, but to cultivate the discipline/character (i.e., “I can’t just quit my job if I don’t want to do it…”)
Of course, we want it to be in and from his heart (which I think it is, but in need of encouragement)… there’s the balance question, isn’t it?! So, I’m posting this particularly because he really doesn’t think he has any special gift here (“anybody” could do this), nor that it will serve his future job (“how’s it going to help me get a job”?).
Looking for any “real experience” words you might be moved to encourage him… that I can convey back to him… it was done in one of those “I don’t want to play any more” moments – I asked if he would play it once for the camera; he wasn’t too happy to play it, nor is it his best playing… but your encouragement is appreciated. Thanks!
